State Crimes
Some crimes are tried at the state level and others at the federal level, depending on which courts have jurisdiction over the crime. Drug trafficking such as transportation, sales and distribution can often be tried in either state or federal courts. Authorities will determine which court has jurisdiction over a drug trafficking case.
Federal Crimes
The Federal courts have jurisdiction over criminal cases which involve the following offenses: white collar crime, bank robbery, bank fraud, pornography cases, mail fraud, theft from the mail, Internet crimes, interstate crimes, smuggling controlled substances, large quantity narcotic conspiracy cases, bribery of public officials, and crimes committed on federal land.
Misdemeanor and Felony
Less serious crimes are categorized misdemeanors with fines and penalties of up to a year in jail. Prostitution, shoplifting, vandalism and trespassing are examples of misdemeanors.
A felony is a serious crime that carries a sentence of more than one year in jail and a maximum sentence of life in prison or capital punishment. Examples of felonies include murder, kidnapping, fraud, forgery and armed robbery.
