Social Security Disability
When a person is unable to work because of mental or physical impairment that is so severe that the person is expected to die from the impairment or is incapable of working for at least a year, the condition is defined as a "disability" under the Social Security Act.
Types of Social Security Disability
There are two main types of social security disability programs that people who are unable to work may apply for:
- Social Security Disability (SSDI) - available for persons who have worked for at least 10 years in the U.S. and have become disabled.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a Federal Welfare program for the disabled that is not dependent on the person having worked.
Other types of social security disability include:
- Disabled Widow's and Widower's Benefits - insured benefits received by a spouse who has worked long enough to be covered by social security, is at least 50 years old, and who has become disabled within a specified time after the death of a spouse.
- Disabled Adult Child Benefits - benefits based on a parent's social security earnings that are available to children whose parents die or become disabled before the children reach 22 years of age.
- SSI Child's Disability benefits - benefits for children who become disabled when under the age of 18
